Argentina/ Child Care in Benavidez

After our visit to Argentina, we decided to sponsor the child care project of Maria Marta. This is to support children in a suburb of Buenos Aires. Here, the children are getting the chance to prepare their homework at an appropriate place. For many of the children it is not possible to do their work at home as their living situations are not made for this. Very often, more than 10 people live in a very small place, i.e. in two rooms (kitchen and bedroom). Moreover, due to the high unemployment and underemployment, many of the adults are at home during the day and there is no room left for the children, not considering resulting problems like alcoholism etc.

The children are helped with their homework as their parents are often not able to do so (illiteracy). Additionally, courses are offered where simple skills like cooking, baking, sewing, cobbling, gardening etc. are imparted. This is just one step to empower for self help. It is a pleasure to see how the courses are adopted.
As many children get a small meal in the school during the week but no food at the weekends, a “Comedor” has been established. Here, the children get a warm meal on Saturdays. Sound massages offered once a week serve for the children’s mental balance. They are well attended.
We are glad that we can help here and would like to mention that such an engagement wouldn’t be possible without the help of many people doing a voluntary job day after day. Especially we would like to mention Maria Marta who provides her premises for the project and who has been actively working with the children for many years. Without her the project wouldn’t exist.
